Japan Flora: Deciduous tree with densely rusty-pubescent branches; leaves obovate, sometimes narrowly so, or elliptic, 3-10 cm. long, 2-6 cm. wide, doubly- toothed, abruptly acuminate, usually obliquely cuneate-obtuse at base, scabrous above, pilose beneath at least on nerves, with 7-13 pairs of lateral nerves, the petioles 4-12 mm. long; samaras obovate, glabrous, 10-16 mm. long, the seeds on upper portion close to the base of style. Apr.-June. Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; rare.
Korea Flora: Deciduous tree. Winter buds 3-5mm long, with 5-6 scales, leaf scars semicircular. Fruit and seeds samara, glabrous in central portion.
Sporophyte chromosome number: 28. Flowering period: Early April-Early May Fruiting period: Mid May-Late May Distribution: Northern China, Japan (Hokkaido-Kyushu); Throughout Korea
Ecological characteristics: Intermediate between shade-tolerant and light-demanding species, but closer to light-demanding. Grows optimally in areas with abundant light, deep soil, and high moisture content, with very rapid initial growth. Very strong sprouting ability. Seeds produced abundantly every 2-3 years.
Taxonomic notes: Although no morphological differences other than fruit characteristics have been identified, it is sometimes treated as a separate species in Russia and China. The form with corky wings developed on branches is called U. davidiana f. suberosa Nakai.
