Japan Flora: Large tree with longitudinally fissured bark, the branches elongate, rather slender, light grayish brown, ascending-pilose while young; leaves membranous, oblong to narrowly obovate, 6-12 cm. long, 3-4 cm. wide, caudately acuminate, with 10-14 pairs of obliquely spreading parallel lateral nerves, subdouble-toothed, glabrous to thinly ascending-pubescent on upper side, ascending- to ap- pressed-pubcscent beneath especially on nerves, the petioles pubescent; flowers 2-5, in sessile umbels, pink, the pedicels 1.5-3 cm. long, with whitish ascending hairs; calyx-tube slightly inflated at base, about 5 mm. long, more or less pubescent; petals about 12 mm. long, retuse; style with few spreading hairs on the lower part. Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; occasionally planted in parks and around temples.
