Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub. Height 3m. Winter buds and branchlets: Terminal bud solitary, elongated ovoid, with a pointed tip. Lateral buds opposite, smaller than the terminal bud, 4-8mm long. Young branches densely covered with stellate hairs. Leaf scars circular or semicircular. Leaves opposite, ovate, elliptical, or elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate apex, rounded or cuneate base, (3-4)5-9(13)cm × (1.5)2.5-5cm. Short hairs on upper surface, dense stellate hairs on lower surface, with sharp teeth on margins. Some individuals have slightly smaller leaves. Petiole 5-10mm long, densely covered with stellate hairs. Flowers in cymes in leaf axils, densely covered with stellate hairs. Calyx deeply divided into 4 parts, densely covered with stellate or feather-like hairs. Corolla 4-5mm long, pale purple, corolla tube almost equal in length to calyx, stamens as long as corolla. Fruit and seeds: Round, purple, 5mm in diameter.

Distribution: Southern Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan; Jeollanamdo, coastal areas of Jeollabukdo, and Jeju in Korea.
Japan Flora: Deciduous shrub, stellate-hairy on young branches; leaves thinly membranous, ovate to broadly so or ovate-elliptic, 5-10(-12) cm. long, 2.5-5 cm. wide, acuminate, rounded to obtuse at base, serrate, densely pubescent above with soft simple hairs, densely stellate-pubescent beneath, minutely glandular-dotted on both surfaces, the petioles 3-5 mm. long; cymes often more than 10-flowered or less, densely stellate-pubescent; calyx 5-parted, the lobes lanceolate, densely stellate-pubescent or with variously branched grayish hairs; corolla 4-5 mm. long, the tube nearly as long as the calyx; fruit purple, 3-4 mm. across. June-July.
