Korea Flora: Deciduous tree up to 20m. Terminal bud 1, 3-7mm long, larger than later bud, cornical, bud scales 4-6 puberulent while young, leaf scars a half circle; leaves opposite, oblong, 3- 9(11)cm ×(2.5)4-6(7)cm, obtuse or acute, green and pubescent on upper side, brownish pubescent on lower part of the midrib beneath, petioles 5-30 mm long; panicles terminal in new shoot, 6-10 cm. long, glabrous, the pedicels 7-10 mm. long; flowers dioecious, calyx deeply 4-lobed, 12-14(20)mm × 3mm, the lobes lanceolate; corolla white, the tube 1-1.5 times as long as the calyx, stames 2 adnate to tube, carpels 2, styles short; fruit ellipentire black, 10-15mm × 8- 9mm, seeds elliptic.

Distribution: China central, Taiwan, Japan Honshu cental to Kyushu; Jella-do, Jeju, Gyeonggi-do

Japan Flora: Tree with gray-brown branches, puberulent while young; leaves oblong, elliptic, or ovate, 5-10(-15) cm. long, 25-6 cm, wide, obtuse or acute, entire or doubly toothed in the young leaves, green and gla­brous on upper side, puberulent on the impressed midribs, brownish pubescent on lower part of the midrib beneath, the 2-lobed, 2-3 mm. long, the lobes lanceolate, acuminate; corolla white, the tube 1-1.5 times as long as the calyx, the lobes linear-oblanceolate, 15-2 cm, long, 2-4 mm, wide; fruit ellip­soidal, black, about 1 cm. long. May.

Honshu (centr. distr. incl. Kanto), Kyushu (Tsushima); rare. Korea, China, and Taiwan.
