Russia Flora: Plant: Shrub, up to 3 m tall. Upper buds ovate, up to 5 mm long, with 2 pairs of outer scales; first pair spreading, light brownish-brown, glabrous; second pair compressed, dark brown, sparsely pubescent. Young shoots weakly pilose. Leaves: Leaf blade entire, margin coarsely sinuate-dentate, nearly orbicular or rounded-obovate, apex abruptly elongated-acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, 5-16(20) cm long, upper surface sparsely fine-pilose, lower surface appressed-pilose along veins and bearded in vein axils; additionally, leaves minutely glandular on both sides. Petiole 1-3.5 cm long. Inflorescence: 5-10(15) cm wide, on peduncle reaching 2-5 cm long. Flowers: Corolla rotate, 5-7 mm in diameter, white. Fruit: Nearly spherical, about 10 mm in diameter, red.
Distribution: Southern Sakhalin, Southern Kuril Islands (Urup, Kunashir, Iturup Islands). (Fig. 93). Found in coniferous and mixed forests. Flowering in June-July. Highly ornamental shrub. Included in the list of rare species of Soviet Far East flora (Kharkevich, Kachura, 1981).
General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (Japan, southern Korean Peninsula). Described from Japan (Honshu Island).
