Japan Flora: Glabrous tree with grayish branches; leaves membranous, ovate or broadly so, 4-7 cm. long, 2.5-4 cm. wide, abruptly or shortly acuminate, acute to rounded at base, mucronate, serrate, sparsely puberulous or nearly glabrous on upper side, with spreading pubescence especially on nerves beneath, pale green and lustrous beneath, the petioles 1-2 cm. long; flowers on short spurs, greenish white, about 4 mm. across, the pedicels slender, 6-12 mm. long; calyx 4- to 5-lobed, ciliolate; petals elliptic, about 2.5 mm. long; stamens 4 or 5; fruit globose-llipsoidal, about 7 mm. long, red, the pyrenes shallowly grooved.  Mountains.

Hok­kaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; common. Korea and China.

f. pseudomacropoda (Loesen.) Hara. Leaves glabrous beneath. 

Korea Flora: Deciduous tree. Height 15m. Winter Buds and Stems: Buds conical, apex pointed, with 6-8 bud scales; terminal buds 1-3mm long, similar in size to lateral buds. Branches short, young branches glabrous. Leaf scars triangular or circular, with minute stipular protuberances on both sides. Spur shoots distinctly developed. Leaves: Alternate, clustered on spur shoots. Thin, broadly ovate or elliptic, apex acute, base rounded or cuneate, 3-10cm × 2-4.5cm, upper surface initially pubescent but becoming glabrous, lower surface retaining hairs along veins. Margins distinctly serrate. Lateral veins 6-8 pairs, prominent on lower surface; petiole 1.5-2cm long. Flowers: Dioecious; pistillate flowers few and clustered on short branches, staminate flowers in dense clusters. Staminate flowers with 4 sepals, 4 petals, and 4 stamens; pistillate flowers with 4-5 staminodes and 1 pistil. Ovary ovoid-globose. Fruit and Seeds: Drupes fleshy, black when mature, 7-8mm in diameter; fruiting peduncle 5-10mm long.

Distribution: Central and Southern China, Hokkaido to Kyushu (Japan); Chungcheongnam-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeju Island (Korea)
