Russia Flora: Plants up to 40(60) cm tall. Tubers 2-5-divided, with root-like attenuated lobe tips. Stem hollow. Leaves (2)3-4(7), up to 12(19) cm long and 3.5(5.5) cm wide, spotted, rarely without spots, from obovate, blunt (lower) to lanceolate, pointed (upper). Inflorescence up to 10(17) cm long and 4(4.5) cm wide, dense, cylindrical. Bracts broadly lanceolate, pointed, lower ones slightly longer than flowers, up to 3(5) cm long and 0.7 cm wide, upper ones shorter than flowers, ovate, finely pointed, up to 1.5 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. Flowers purple, pink, rarely white. Outer perianth segments lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, long-pointed; lateral segments up to 15 mm long, up to 5 mm wide at base, middle segment up to 13 mm long and 4 mm wide. Two segments of inner whorl up to 7 mm long and 4 mm wide, ovate-lanceolate, pointed. Lip up to 10 mm long and 11 mm wide, densely covered with minute papillae above, rounded-obovate, almost entire, with irregularly crenate margins or shortly 3-lobed at tip, with tooth-like pointed middle lobe. Spur up to 16 mm long and 2.5 mm thick, horizontal or slightly curved upward. Capsule up to 2 cm long, 0.6 cm wide, oval-elliptical. 2n = 40 (Sokolovskaya, 1960), 40-42 (Sokolovskaya, 1963 - as Orchis aristata).
Kamchatka, North Sakhalin, North Kurils, South Sakhalin, South Kurils, reported for Okhotsk (Voroshilov, 1985) and Commander Islands (Vasiliev, 1957). - Sparse mixed coniferous forests, herb meadow coastal terraces, stone birch forests, in masses in places; up to subalpine belt. V-IX. - General distribution: Japan-China (Korean Peninsula, North Japan), North America (Alaska and Aleutian Islands). - Described from North America (Aleutian Islands: Unalaska Island).
