Russia Flora: Plants up to 55 cm tall. Rhizome thick, with mass of roots. Shoot base with brownish sheaths. Stem erect, pubescent with short yellowish hairs. Leaves alternate, 3-5, oval-elliptical, pointed, up to 20 cm long and 10 cm wide, with sparse short hairs on both sides and margins. Flowers (1)2-3, with leaf-like elliptical-lanceolate pointed bract. Outer perianth segments reddish-brown, sometimes with greenish tinge, upper segment of outer perianth whorl up to 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, elliptical-lanceolate, rarely ovate, overhanging the lip, lower segment up to 4.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, formed by 2 fused lateral segments and bifid at tip. Lateral segments of inner perianth whorl up to 6 cm long and 0.8 cm wide, linear-lanceolate, pointed, horizontally deflexed, slightly twisted at tip. Lip up to 3.5 cm long, yellow, with reddish spots inside. Ovary pubescent. Capsule up to 4.5 cm long and 0.9 cm wide, elongate-oblong, with beak up to 0.4 cm long. 2n = 20 (Sokolovskaya, 1966).

Aldan, Dauria, Lower Zeya, Bureya, Ussuri, South Sakhalin. - Sparse deciduous and mixed forests in the south of the region, in sparse pine forests on south-facing slopes in the north, among shrubs in clearings and forest edges, sometimes in masses. VI-VIII. Protected, ornamental. - General distribution: European part, Caucasus, West and East Siberia; Scandinavia, Atlantic Europe, Central Europe, Mediterranean, Asia Minor, Mongolia, Japan-China (Northeast China, Korean Peninsula). - Described from Europe.

Note. VLA has one herbarium sheet from South Sakhalin with 2 separate lateral segments of the outer perianth whorl, which brings it closer to the Japanese species C. debile Reichenb. fil. Additional collections and field observations are needed to resolve the species identity.
