Japan Flora: Subscandent, glabrous shrub; leaves ovate or oblong-ovate, 4-6 cm. long, 2.5-3 cm. wide, acute to subobtuse, rounded at base, glabrous and deep green on upper side, whitish or yellowish and glabrous except for axillary tufts or hairs beneath, the lateral nerves 7-8 pairs, the petioles 1-1.5 cm. long, reddish, glabrous; racemes many, spreading, many-flowered, glabrous, in terminal panicles 10-25 cm. long, the pedicels 2-3 mm. long; flowers greenish; calyx-lobes deltoid, acuminate; fruit oblong, 5-7 mm. long, reddish, black at maturity. Aug. Thickets in low mountains.
Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; common.
var. magna Makino. Leaves large, 5-10 cm, long; calyx-lobes shorter, acute. Mountains; Shikoku, Kyushu; rather rare.
f. pubescens (Ohwi) Nemoto. Leaves with scattered pubescence beneath. Honshu (Kinki Distr.), Shikoku, Kyushu.
