Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub. Height 3-4m. Stems: Branches spreading in all directions from near base, much-branched. Young branches grayish-brown, 3-4mm in diameter, almost without hairs and thorns. Leaves: Alternate, palmately compound; leaflets 3-5, spathulate or spathulate-elliptic, apex acuminate, base cuneate, 6-15cm long. Margins with fine double serrations; upper surface green, glabrous; lower surface light green with fine hairs along veins. Petiole 3-6cm long. Flowers: In umbels (sometimes considered capitate), developing at tips of new branches, arranged cymosely at spine tips. Main peduncle 1-2cm long, pedicels very short (about 1mm). Flowers purple; sepals triangular with dense pubescence on outside; petals elliptic, 5; styles completely united. Fruit and Seeds: Berries ellipsoid, slightly flattened, 10-14mm × 3-4mm.

Fast-growing, thrives in areas with relatively high soil moisture. Prefers rocky sites in valleys with adequate moisture. Strong cold and pollution resistance, good sprouting ability, and rarely affected by pests or diseases.
Russia Flora: Woody climbing vine up to 15 m tall. Bark dark gray, with well-developed cork layer. Leaves round-cordate, up to 30 cm in diameter, with sparse short hairs. Flowers arranged 1—2 on shortened branches. Perianth tube up to 1 cm long. Perianth simple, petaloid, with horseshoe-shaped curved tube and 3-lobed limb. Tube up to 6 cm long, glabrous outside, green, pubescent inside, with purple rings and spots, inflated in upper part. Limb greenish-yellow or brown, up to 2 cm in diameter. Fruit — cylindrical 6-angled capsule up to 10 cm long, 3 cm wide. Seeds flat, cordate-triangular, 6—7 mm in diameter, grayish-brown. (Plate III).
Ussuri (south). (Fig. 7). — In lower parts of slopes, on forest edges and in open broadleaved forests, under rocks, in river valleys. VI, IX. Protected. Valuable ornamental. — General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (PRC, DPRK). — Described from DPRK.
