Japan Flora: Biennial brownish red hispid herb; stems terete, 30-80 cm. long, leafy, often branched; lower and radical leaves oblanceolate, 6-15 cm. long, 1-4 cm. wide, mucronate or acutely toothed, subobtuse, gradually narrowed to a petiolelike base, the median cauline leaves sessile, the upper ones linear-lanceolate, sometimes semidasping; heads 2-2.5 cm. across, yellow; involucres green, often slightly bl ack-tinged, the inner bracts linear-lanceolate, 8-12 mm. long, about 1.5 mm. wide, hispid and short-pubescent on back, the outer very short; achenes red-brown, narrowly fusiform, about 4 mm. long, longitudinally ribbed, nearly beakless; pappus sordid-white, 7-8 mm. long. May-Oct. Grassy places in lowlands and mountains.
