Japan Flora: Rhizomes short-creeping, densely scaly; stipes 30-70 cm. long, brown; scales at base of stipes and on rhizomes very numerous, membranous, lustrous, linear, 2-3 cm. long, about 2 mm. wide, nearly entire, glabrous; scales on upper part of stipes and rachis ovate to broadly lanceolate, 2-4 mm. long, narrowed at tip, appressed, lustrous, ciliate; blades ov^te, 40-70 cm. long, 20-40 cm. wide, 3-pinnate, short-acuminate, the rachis densely scaly; pinnae obliquely spreading, equilateral, short-petiolulate or sessile, the lowest pinnae largest, longer petiolulate, the posterior side broader than the anterior; pinnules oblong-ovate to lanceolate, usually 2-5 cm. long, obtuse to subacute, crenate to lobed, sparsely pilose on upper surface, with brownish short hairs on the costas, the costules beneath with small appressed ovate scales; sori costal or near base of veinlets; indusia membranous, ovate-orbicular or orbicular-reniform, about 0.2 mm. across, crose-ciliate.
