Japan Flora: Large erect loosely branched shrub, the branches grayish brown or reddish gray, rather thick, terete; leaves rather thick, broadly oblanceolate to narrowly obovate-oblong, 7-12 cm. long, 2.5-4 cm. wide, rounded with an abrupt obtuse tip, acuminate to acute at base, entire, lustre­less and grayish brown when dried, with scattered obscure pellucid dots, with pale brown scurfy pilose hairs beneath while young, the midrib rather thick, impressed on upper side, raised beneath, the lateral nerves obliquely spreading, many, weak, the petioles 5-8 mm. long; inflorescence subterminal on special articulating lateral pedunclelike rather thick branches 25-4.5 cm. long, the pedicels 7-10 mm. long; calyx-segments broadly ovate, obtuse, pale brown-scurfy, ciliolate; corolla about 7 mm. across; fruit globose, dark purple, 7-8 mm. across.
