Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub. Height 2-3m. Branchlets: Young branches hairless, grayish-brown, lenticels not distinct; two-year-old branches grayish-brown with round lenticels. Leaves opposite, broadly ovate, apex acute or acuminate, base slightly cordate or truncate, 5-12cm long. Margins entire, both surfaces hairless. Petiole 20-25mm long. Flowers in panicles at the end of previous year's growth, opposite, 7-12cm long. Inflorescence axis with linear protuberances, pedicels less than 2mm long. Flowers light purple, fragrant, 2cm in diameter. Calyx 4-lobed, lobes unequal in length, pointed, with glandular hairs. Corolla tube 10-15mm long, 4 petals 4-7mm long, elliptical, apex obtuse. Two stamens attached to upper part of corolla tube, not exserted; pollen yellow. Pistil 5mm long, stigma deeply bifid, yellow; ovary green. Capsule, ellipsoid, apex acuminate, 9-15mm long.

Fruiting September-October.
Distribution: Jilin and Liaodong in China; Hwanghaedo, Pyongannamdo, and South Hamgyongnamdo in Korea.
Taxonomic notes: There are differences in the size of the corolla tube and petals between S. oblata, which is widely distributed in inland China, and this lilac species. Therefore, treating them as subspecies seems appropriate.
