Japan Flora: Rhizomes short, with ascending short innovations; culms 40-70 cm. long, terete, smooth; leaf­blades flat, 15-20 cm. long, 3-6 mm. wide, short-acuminate, soft, nearly smooth; sheaths without a keel, the lower terete with fused margins; ligules about 1 mm. long, truncate; panicles broadly ovate, open, diffuse, 8-15 cm. long, the branches 2- to 4-nate, nearly smooth, spreading, spikelet-bear­ing on the upper parts, the verticils naked at base; spikelets 5-7 mm. long, 2- or 3-flowered, glaucous-green; glumes broadly lanceolate, acute, the lower 1- to 3-nerved, about 3.5 mm. long, the upper 3-nerved, 4-5 mm. long, scabrous on the nerves; lemmas narrowly ovate, rather acute, about 5 mm. long, gla­brous on the sides, the midrib and marginal nerves short- pubescent near base, the web scanty and short. July-Aug, High mountains.
