Japan Flora: Stout, pde green perennial; culms 80-150 cm. long; leaf-blades rather thick, firm, scabrous, 40-60 cm. long, 3-12 mm. wide, short-acuminate, with loosely involute mar­gins; sheaths terete; ligules truncate, about 1 mm. long; pani­cles large, 20-30 cm. long, ovate, nodding, the branches sub- verticillate, scabrous; spikelets numerous, 6-8 mm. long, 4- to 6- flowered, pale green, rarely slightly brownish; glumes ob­tuse, narrowly oblong, 1-nerved, 1.5-2 mm. long; lemmas nar­rowly oblong, 3-4 mm. long, punctate-scaberulous, 7-nerved, obtuse, rather thin; palea as long as the lemma; caryopsis narrowly obovoid, about 1.5 mm. long. July-Aug. Ponds and riverbanks.

Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu; rather rare. Korea, Ussuri, Manchuria, China, and Formosa.
