Trees to 25 m tall, 1 m d.b.h., deciduous. Branchlets grayish brown, glabrescent, lenticellate; lenticels brownish, rounded. Leaf blade narrowly elliptic-obovate to obovate, 10-20 cm long, 5-14 cm wide, base cuneate to rounded, apex slightly obtuse to shortly acuminate; secondary veins 10-15 on each side of midvein. Densely brownish or grayish stellate hair-pubescent beneath; petiole 1-36mm, glabrous. Female inflorescences axillary on young shoots; cupules solitary or in fascicles of 2 or 3. Fruits cupule cupular, 6-23 mm long, 7-16 mm wide, enclosing ca. 1/2 of nut; bracts ovate-lanceolate, ca. 2 mm, crowded, grayish pubescent; nuts ellipsoid to ovoid, 1.5-3 cm.
Flowering April to May Fruting October Distribution: China, Japan, Korea. Korea: All provinces except HN. Not forming pure stands, but scattered in deciduous lowlands with Q. serrata.
