Japan Flora: Tree with puberulent or glabrous young branches; leaves ovate to ovate-oblong, 6-10(-15) cm. long, 25-4.5(-55) cm. wide, caudate to abruptly acuminate, glabrous on both sides or pilose along the midrib beneath while young, acutely toothed, the petioles 6-8(-10) mm. long, glabrous or puberulent while young; racemes 12-20 cm. long inclusive of short few-leaved peduncles, rather dense, many-flowered, glabrous or puberulent on rachis; flowers white, 6-8 mm. across, the pedicels 3-10 mm. long; calyx with obconical tube, the teeth deltoid, short, pilose inside; petals suborbicular, about 3 mm. long; stamens longer than the petals; drupe ellipsoidal, acute, 6-7 mm. long, black. Apr.-June. Hills and mountains.
Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu. Plants of the northern part of the range generally have larger leaves and more pilose calyx-teeth than those in the southern part of the distribution.
