Japan Flora: Evergreen tree with reddish brown exfoliating bark; leaves subcoriaceous, narrowly ovate-oblong or -elliptic, 10-20 cm. long, 4-7 cm. wide, gradually narrowed to the tip, glabrous or thinly soft-pubescent beneath, acutely toothed, the petioles 10-15 mm. long, with a gland on each side at the top; racemes short, 1- to 5-nate, densely many-flowered, nearly sessile, the bracts broadly deltoid, caducous, with pale brown pubescence; flowers white, 6-7 mm. across, the rachis and pedicels with short spreading hairs; calyx-tube broadly obconical, slightly hairy, the teeth shorter than the tube; petals reflexed, about 3 mm. long, nearly orbicular; ovary glabrous, the style 3-3.5 mm. long; drupe ovoid, about 18 mm. long, terminated by the persistent style base.
