Japan Flora: Tall de­ciduous shrub with elongate stout spines 7-20 mm. long, the young branchlets usually glabrous; leaves broadly ovate, 1.5-5 cm. long, 2-4 cm. wide, subobtuse, deep green, deeply (3-) 5-lobed, the lobes obtuse, slightly toothed on upper margin, gla­brous or nearly so, the petioles 1-2 cm. long, glabrous or nearly so; inflorescence glabrous, several-flowered, terminal on short branches; flowers white, about 15 xnm. across, single; styles 2-3; fruit red, subglobose, terminated by the persistent reflexed calyx-teeth. Apr.-May.

Cultivated in gardens. Europe.
