June-Aug. Riverbanks and valleys, some times in clearings in mountains;
Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu. s. Kuriles and Korea.
var. tosaense (Nakai) H.Hara. Leaves less densely hairy on upper side. Occurs with the typical phase.
var. yesoense Nakai. Inflorescence more prominently hairy. Occurs with the typical phase.
