Mycoheterotrophic perennial. It grows on the forest floor of natural forests of evergreen broad-leaved trees.
Flowers 1-5, erect, bell-shaped, dark brown, slightly nodding or slightly up Blooms upside down, about 13 mm long, about 8 mm in diameter, with a slight wart-like protrusion on the outer surface. The sepals and petals are about 2/3 of the length It coalesces up to 5 and becomes a 5-lobed corolla. The lip is orange-yellow at the base, greenish-white in the middle, and dark red at the top. Inflorescence about 1 to 4 cm, growing to 30 cm at fruiting stage. The capsule is about 3 cm long, cylindrical, and dark green. Flowering in April.
The total number of extant mature individuals is less than 50. A new population from Yakushima was reported in 2015.
