Japan Flora: Dioe­cious shrub; prickles on branches at base of each leaf 2, spreading, 1.2-15 cm. long, prominently flattened and dilated at base; petioles 1-3 cm. long, winged; leaves pinnately 3- to 5(-7)-foliolate, the leaflets sessile, broadly lanceolate to nar­rowly oblong, 3-7 cm. long, 1-2.5 cm. wide, acute to acumi­nate, often emarginate, glabrous or spreading-pilose on the midrib beneath, with pellucid glands on margins, entire or obtusely toothed; inflorescence a nearly sessile axillary raceme often branched at base, 1-3 cm. long; flowers pale yellow.  May. Low  ountains.

Honshu (Kanto and westw.), Shi­koku, Kyushu. Ryukyus, Formosa, China, and Korea.

Korea Flora: Evergreen shrub. Height up to 4m. Winter buds and twigs: Naked. Twigs hairless with flat, opposite spines. Leaves alternate, compound with 4-7 leaflets. Leaflets ovate, with acuminate apex and cuneate base. Size: 3-12cm × 1-2.5cm, with the central leaflet being the largest. Upper surface hairless. Lower surface downy hairs or be hairless, with transparent glands and fine serrations along the margins. Petioles and rachis developed wings. Petiole 1-3cm long. Flowers dioecious. Inflorescence racemose or compound racemose, growing in leaf axils, 3-4cm long. small, pale yellow flowers. carpels reddish, 5mm long, with glands. Seeds black.

Fruiting September-October

Distribution: Southeast Asian countries including Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines; from inland China to south-central China, northern Taiwan, southern Honshu to Okinawa in Japan; South Jeolla Province, Gyeongsangnamdo, and Jeju in Korea.
