Japan Flora: Procumbent or ascending shrub densely gray-white puberulent; branches 4-angled; leaves herbaceous, broadly ovate to broadly elliptic, 2-5 cm. long, 15-3 cm. wide, obtuse to rounded, abruptly acute at base, entire, green and thinly puberulent above, densely grayish puberulent beneath; panicles terminal, densely flowered, 4-7 cm. long, with very short branches; corolla purplish, about 13 mm. long; style about 15 mm. long; fruit globose, 5-7 mm. across, enclosed on lower half by the persistent calyx. July-Sept. Sandy places by the sea;
