Korea Flora: Small tree. Height 10m. Winter Buds and Stems: Buds conical, 2-3mm long; flower buds in leaf axils of previous year's branches. Branches thick, glabrous, brownish. Leaves: Evergreen, alternate, thick, elliptic, oblong, or oblong-spathulate, abruptly acute at apex, cuneate at base, 5-8(10)cm × 2-3cm. Both surfaces glabrous, margins entire or occasionally with 2-3 teeth. Petiole 8-15mm long. Flowers: Dioecious, 8mm in diameter, yellowish-green; pistillate flowers 1-2, staminate flowers numerous in leaf axils; peduncle 5-10mm long. Sepals and petals 4 each; stamens 4, equal to petals in staminate flowers but shorter in pistillate flowers; pistil much reduced in staminate flowers. Fruit and Seeds: Globose, 1-1.2cm in diameter, red; fruiting peduncle 5-8mm long.
Flowering Period: March-April Fruiting Period: Mid-August to early November Distribution: Taiwan, Zhejiang (Putuo) China, Western Honshu southward to Okinawa (Japan); Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju Island (Korea) Ecological Characteristics: Strong sprouting ability and shade tolerance. Grows on coastal slopes. Taxonomic Notes: Ilex ×wandoensis C. F. Miller et M. Kim is known as a hybrid between Ilex cornuta and Ilex integra. It is shrubby with petioles 10-14mm long, 5-6 pistillate flowers, and 18-24 staminate flowers, showing characteristics more similar to Ilex cornuta (Miller and Kim, 2002).
