Wet places in lowlands and mountains.

var. nipponicum (Maxim.) Nakai Larger than the typical variety; peduncles to 30 cm. tall; heads to 5 mm. long; floral bracts, sepals and petals densely white-bearded. Wet places in lowlands; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; quite common. Korea and China.
