Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub to 1m tall. Branches with solid white pith; young branches with brown spots. Winter buds narrowly elliptic with 6 brown or green scales.Leaves opposite, ovate or elliptic, 3.5-7.0 × 2.0-4.5cm; apex acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, very thin; both surfaces glaucous; adaxially densely minutely pubescent, abaxially tomentose; margins entire; petioles 1-5mm long.Flowers precocious, 10-12mm long, pale yellow or red, paired at tips of previous year's branches; peduncles (2)4-10mm long, with minute hairs and glands; bracts pubescent; bracteoles absent. Corolla deeply bilaterally divided, upper and lower lips not clearly differentiated; tube short, broad at base. Calyx glabrous; lobes irregular with glandular-ciliate margins. Stamens slightly exceeding petals; filaments light red; anthers purple.Fruit ovaries fused in lower half, glabrous; fruit 8mm long, maturing red.
Flowering late February to early April Fruiting May. Distribution: Northeastern China, Russian Far East, central Honshu (Japan); throughout Korean Peninsula except Gyeongsangnam-do.
