Japan Flora: Roots thickened, conical, more or less lobed; stems erect, 15-30 cm. long, or 3-leaved on lower half; leaves narrowly obovate-oblong or oblong, 4-8 cm. long, 1.5-3.5 cm. wide, rounded to acute at apex, sheathing at base; spikes 4-12 cm. long, rather dense, many-flowered; bracts usually longer than the flower, narrowly lanceolate, 1-4 cm. long; flowers greenish brown, small; sepals narrowly ovate, 5-7 mm. long, obtuse, 5- to 7-nerved, ascending; petals linear-lanceolate, 1-nerved, shorter than the sepals; lip pendulous, oblanceolate, rather thick, longer than the sepals, shallowly 3-lobed, the lateral lobes about 2 mm. long, erect, broadly lanceolate, obtuse, the terminal lobe subrounded, about 0.5 mm. long; spur narrowly ovoid, about 3 mm. long. May-July. High mountains;

Hokkaido, Honshu (centr. and n. distr.); rather rare. Korea, China, e. Siberia, Europe, and N. America.

Russia Flora: Plant up to 50 cm high, glabrous . Tubers oblong, 2-3-palmate-lobed. Base of stem with brownish leafless sheaths. Leaves 2-5 in number, up to 12 cm long and 6 cm wide, elliptic-lanceolate, alternate. Inflorescence up to 15 cm long, not dense. Bracts longer than the flowers or equal to them, lanceolate, pointed. Outer perianth lobes up to 8 mm long, ovate-oblong, yellowish-green, with dark veins. Lateral lobes of the inner perianth whorl up to 6 mm long, narrowly linear. Lip up to 9 mm long, narrowly obovate, three-toothed at the end, with a poorly expressed central tooth, with a saccate spur up to 2 mm long. Ovary sessile, twisted. Capsule up to 1 cm long.

All regions except Nyukzha, Dauria, and North Sakhalin. - Sparse coniferous and deciduous forests, glades and edges, meadows and meadow areas in the sub-alpine belt. VI-VII. - General distr.: European part, Caucasus, West and East Siberia, Central Asia; Scandinavia, Atlantic and Central Europe, Mediterranean, Asia Minor, Iran, Junggar-Kashgar, Mongolia, Tibet, Japan-China, North America. - Described from Europe.
