Russia Flora: Plant succulent, up to 60 cm tall. Rhizome horizontal, thick, nodular, with a bundle of numerous roots. Large brown membranous sheaths developed at base of grooved stem. Leaves alternate, 2-3, peltate, rounded-reniform, with deeply cordate base. Leaf blade up to 25 cm long, 30 cm wide, with 2 large lobes at apex, irregularly dentate, with 7-9 main veins, green above, white-tomentose below. Inflorescence an umbelliform corymb. Flowers 8-12, up to 2 cm in diameter. Sepals 6, petaloid, deciduous. Petals 6, similar to sepals, white, spreading, up to 1 cm long. Fruit an ellipsoid blue berry up to 1.3 cm in diameter. Seeds 6-9, pyriform. 2n=12 (Sokolovskaya, 1960). (Table V).
Distribution: North Sakhalin, South Sakhalin, South Kuril (Fig. 14). - A rare relict species, found on rich, well-drained soils in river valleys.
Flowering in June, fruiting in August. Protected.
General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (Japan). - Described from Sakhalin: "Found frequently in humus-rich moist valleys. Arkai May 27, 1861 (fl. Glehn), early Aug. 1860 (fruiting Glehn); Dui early June 1860 (fl.), July 21 (fruiting Glehn); Bay d'Estaing end of July (fruiting); Kussunai April 25, 1861 (fl. beginning Brylkin), mid-May (fr. Brylkin); Mamie mid-Aug. 1860 (fruiting)" (syntypes - LE).
