Korea Flora: Deciduous shrub. Height 1-2m. Winter Buds and Stems: Branchlets grayish-green; thorns either trifurcate or developing as simple spines, 5-9mm long. Leaves: Alternate, appearing fascicled. Obovate with entire margins (without serrations). Leaf size 1.5-4cm. Both surfaces glabrous. Leaf apex acuminate or acute to obtuse. Flowers: In racemes of 8-15 flowers, 3-6cm long, with short pedicels 3-6mm long. Perfect (hermaphroditic), yellow with reddish tinge on surface. Stamens about 2mm long. Fruit and Seeds: Red berries, elongate-ellipsoid, 9mm long. Ovules (seeds) 1(or 2).

Distribution: Northeastern and inland China, Far Eastern Russia, Mongolia; North Pyeongan-do (Korea)

Taxonomic Notes: The previously used name B. poiretii C.K. Schneid., Mitt. Deutsch. Dendrol. Ges. 15, 180 (1906) is now considered a synonym of this species (according to Dr. Julian Harber).
