Japan Flora: Erect branched annual) 30-60 cm. long; stems obtusely angled, loosely soft-pubescent; leaves thinly membranous, broadly to narrowly ovate, 6-10 cm. long, 2.5-6 cm. wide, short-acuminate with an obtuse tip, cuneate to broadly cuneate at base, toothed, thinly pubescent above and on nerves beneath, the petioles winged in upper part; spikes terminal and axillary, 5-10 cm. long, 7-8 mm. across, densely manyflowered, one-sided, the bracts depressed-orbicular, short-ciliate, rounded at base, nearly glabrous on back, as long as to slightly longer than the calyx, often purplish, the awns 1-2 mm. long; flowers pale rose-colored, about 5 mm. long; calyx 3-3.5 mm. long in fruit, the teeth spine-tipped; nutlets narrowly obovate, about 1 mm. long, slightly flattened, broadly rounded at apex, cuneate at base. Sept.-Nov.
Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; common. s. Kuriles, Korea, Formosa, China, temperate Asia to w. Europe.

Sept.-Oct. Sunny slopes along streams and valleys in mountains.
Honshu (Kanto Distr. and westw.), Kyushu. The typical phase occurs in China.
