Japan Flora: Densely branched, dioecious, glabrous shrub with branchlets often becoming spinelike; leaves obovate to broadly cuneate, 2.5-8 cm. long, 1.2-3 cm. wide, rounded, obtuse or abruptly acute with obtuse dp, long-cuneate at base, whitish and be­coming brownish when dry beneath, the petioles 1-3 mm. long; flowers several, fasciculate, axillary, short-pedicellatc; sepals 6, about 1.5 mm. long; capsules depressed-globose, 6-8 mm. across, 4- or 5*locular; styles short, cylindric. July-Oct. 

Honshu (Kii and Ise Prov. and Chugoku Distr.), Shi­koku, Kyushu. Ryukyus
