Japan Flora: Longer and denser hairs; leaves often deeply cleft, sometimes with needle-shaped cystoliths (under magnification); 3 upper petals broadly ovate, distinctly clawed and with a yellow spot near the base, about 4 mm. long; capsules broad; seeds narrowly fusiform, about 0.7 mm. long, minutely tuberculate.  Sept.-Oct. Wet shaded places especially on rocks and along streams in mountains.

Honshu (Kanto Distr, and westw.), Shikoku, Kyushu; rather rare.

var. stolonifera (Makino) Koidz. Plant stoloniferous. Kyushu (Hizen and Hi go Prov.).
