Russia Flora: Tree 10-12 m tall. Terminal buds paired, about 4 mm long, cherry-red. Shoots purple, glabrous. Leaves 9-11-lobed, almost circular in general outline, up to 13 (15) cm in diameter, cordate at base, glabrous above, sparsely soft-hairy along veins below; leaf lobes broadly lanceolate, doubly dentate-serrate in upper half. Petioles 3-5 cm long, purple, pubescent with sparse short hairs. Flowers 4-5 mm in diameter; petals and sepals purple. Samaras diverging almost at right angle, rarely at obtuse angle, their chambers hairy. (Table XIX).

Distribution: South Kuril (Kunashir Island). (Fig. 63). - In mixed forests. Flowering in June. A highly ornamental species which, along with A. palmatum Thunb., serves as an essential component of traditional Japanese garden art. Requires special protection measures as it is very rare in the south of Kunashir Island.

General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (Korean Peninsula, islands of Hokkaido and Honshu). - Described from Japan.
