Japan Flora: Small evergreen pubescent suffrutescent shrub with slender, scarcely flattened prickles; stems slender, slightly woody, creeping, slightly prickly, the erect fertile branches 10-20 cm. long, few-leaved; leaves orbicular-cordate, 3-5 cm, long, ob­tusely to subacutdy toothed, sometimes obsoletcly incised, the petioles 4-7 cm. long, prickly; pedicels 1-5 cm. long, prickly; calyx ovoid, rather densely prickly, 15-20 mm. long, the lobes laciniate, short-pubescent inside, reflexed in fruit; petals nar­rowly obovate, about 10 mm. long; receptacles and carpels pilose, the stones 2.5 mm. long, less prominently rugose. May-July. Woods.

Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu.
