Japan Flora: Stems 60-70 cm. long, nearly terete, purplish, mealy-puberu- lent; lower cauline leaves chartaceous, deltoid to elongate- deltoid, 10-13 cm. long, caudate, truncate to subcordate at base, toothed, loosely pubescent on both sides, the petioles narrowly winged; median and upper leaves many, gradually smaller, the uppermost leaves oblong to linear-lanceolate; heads rather many, in loose corymbs, very short pedicellate; involucres globose, about 11 mm. wide, more or less cobwebby; bracts 4-seriate, the outer ovate, mucronate-acuminate, sometimes shortly recurved, black-tinged, the inner linear, acuminate; corollas about 11 mm. long.
