Japan Flora: A large, glabrous, evergreen, dioecious shrub with brownish gray branches; leaves coriaceous, elliptic or ovate, sometimes ovate-oblong, 5-10 cm. long, 25-4.5 cm. wide, obtuse or obtusely acute, sometimes emarginate, abruptly acuminate at base, entire, with slightly recurved margins, deep green and lustrous above, the midrib rather slender, the lateral nerves slender, both slightly raised, the petioles 7-12 mm. long; flowers 5-merous, sessile, few, on a short peduncle 7-12 mm. long, pale green, about 5 mm. across, with 2 small bracteoles just beneath the calyx; calyx-lobes rounded, minutely toothed; petals orbicular, about 3 mm. long; disc cup-shaped; filaments short, borne on the margin of the disc, as long as the pale yellow anthers; capsules ellipsoidal; 1.5-2 cm. long, smooth, dehiscent and exposing a large red seed.
