Japan Flora: culms to 1 m. long, pale or straw-colored at base; auricles at summit of leaf-sheath prominent; spikelets 7- to 20-flowered, 1-2 cm. long; lemmas 1-8 mm. long, at least the upper awned. May-June.

Nat­uralized in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu; common. Intro­duced from Europe.
