Russia Flora: Tree up to 15 (24) m tall. Terminal buds elliptical, up to 5 mm long, black or dark brown, scales slightly pubescent along margins. Shoots whitish or light brown. Leaves 5-7-lobed, 6-10 (13) cm long, 8-15 (18) cm wide, base weakly cordate to broadly cuneate, thick, glabrous above, with tufts of short hairs along veins below; leaf lobes elongated-triangular or triangular-oval, length exceeding half of total leaf length, drawn into long pointed tips at apex, entire, rarely with 1 (2) teeth on each side. Petioles 5-10 cm long, thin, usually glabrous. Inflorescence 15-30-flowered, glabrous. Flowers 6-8 mm in diameter, light yellow or greenish-yellow; petals oblong-oval, glabrous; sepals ovate, obtuse, sparsely short-hairy outside; stamens 8, longer than petals, glabrous. Samaras 2-3 cm long, diverging at acute or obtuse angle. 2n=26 (Starodubtsev, 1984). (Table XIX).
Distribution: Lower Zeya, Bureya, Amgun, Ussuri (Fig. 63). - Fairly common in coniferous-broadleaved and deciduous forests of various types, from seashore to mid-mountains. Flowering in May. Ornamental, rare in landscaping; wood widely used for furniture, plywood, parquet and other products; good honey plant; sap contains up to 2.5% sugar.
General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (Northeast China, Korean Peninsula, Japan - islands of Shikoku, Kyushu and southern Honshu). - Described from Khabarovsk: "On northern Amur at forest edges, 1856, C. Maximowicz" (type - LE).
