Japan Flora: Perennial; stems 40-80 cm. long, erect, usually with long spreading hairs on nodes; leaves once or twice pinnate or ternate, long- petiolate, the leaflets narrowly ovate to broadly so, the terminal ones slightly larger, 2-7 cm. long, the bipinnate ones 1-2.5 cm. long; spikes terminal, 10-25 cm. long, often branched at base, with long spreading hairs; corolla deep purple, about 1 cm. long, long-pubescent externally; nutlets 1.5-2 mm. long. July-Aug.
Honshu (centr. and w. distr.).
var. lutescens. Flowers pale yellow. Honshu (Suzuka mts. in e. Kinki Distr.).
var. stolonifera G. Nakai. Resembles var. intermedia but stolons developed after anthesis. Honshu (Tokaido, from Izu Prov. to Mikawa Prov.).
var. crenata (Makino) Murata. Mountain phase with pale purple flowers, and the anther connectives usually glabrous. Honshu (centr. and n. distr.)
