Japan Flora: Stems 1-15 m. long, short-pubcsccnt; median cauline leaves oblong-lanceolate, 24-28 cm. long, acuminate, abruptly nar* rowed at base, sessile, sometimes clasping, pinnatcly lobed, the lobes 5 or 6 pairs, ovate, acute, glabrous on upper side, densely white-cobwebby beneath, the spines 2-3 mm. long; heads soli- tary on the branches, nodding at anthesis, sometimes bracteate; involucres campanulate-globosc, about 1.7 cm. long, 2.5-35 cm. wide, cobwebby; bracts 5- or 6-seriatc, much-elongate toward the tip, much recurved, the outer linear-lanceolate or ovatc- acuniinate, scarcely spinc-tippcd, the median oblong-lanceolate; corollas purplish, about 16 mm. long. Aug.-Sept. Woods and grassy places along streams in high mountains.
