Sunny places; Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku; common. Widespread in all temperate and tropical regions.
var. nipponica Ohwi. A robust phase with spikes 5-10 cm. long; spikelets 3-3.5 mm. long. Honshu and westward; connected by intermediates with the typical phase.
