Japan Flora: Rather stout, firm annual; culms 30-50 cm. long; leaf-blades 10-25 cm. long, 4-7 mm. wide, flat; ligules nearly obsolete; uppermost sheath slightly inflated, elongate, the blade short; branches of inflorescence about 10, sparsely pilose, erect or ascending, 3-7 cm. long, sessile; spikelets numerous on one side of the branches, dense, pale green and sometimes dull, 2-keeled; stamens 3; caryopsis glabrous, smooth, the hilum purple; glumes narrowly lanceolate, the first 1.5 mm. long, the second awn-pointed, 3-4 mm. long; lemma obtuse, 3.5-4 mm. long, whitish hairy on upper margins, the keel obtuse, pubes­cent, bowed out about the middle; the awn delicate, erect, 10-15 mm. long; anthers 03 mm. long; sterile floret single, clavate, 1.5-2 mm. long, long-awned. Korea Flora: Habit An annual herb, 20-50cm tall, branching and spreading from the base.

Leaves Leaves 5-15cm × 4-7mm, ligule ca. 0.8mm long, thick, with hairs along the margin.

Flowers Spikelets sessile, flattened, with 1 bisexual floret articulated at the base and 1 reduced floret (only lemma remaining) above; spikelets pale-colored but slightly purplish-tinged. Glumes lanceolate; first glume 1.5mm long with 1 vein; second glume 3-4mm long, terminating in an awn. Lemma obtuse, 3.5-4mm long, with 3 veins, hairy along the keel; awn 10-15mm long, arising from the upper portion of the back.

Inflorescence Flowering in August, inflorescence digitately divided with about 10 rachises, 3-8cm long.

Distribution Growing north of Gyeonggi Province; in Gyeonggi Province, grows along the western coast.
