Russia Flora: Plant stemless, 15-20 cm tall. Rhizome short, horizontal, with stolons and numerous roots. Leaves basal, with palmate venation, glabrous, gathered in clusters. Petioles up to 20 cm long. Leaf blade almost circular, up to 8 cm in diameter, with cordate base and large notch at apex, irregularly wavy along margin, with small mucro at projection tips. Flowers solitary, blue, up to 2.5 cm in diameter. Sepals 3, petaloid. Petals 6, larger than sepals, up to 1.5 cm long, 0.6 cm wide. Stamens 6, free. Pistil one, composed of 2 unequal carpels with bilobed stigma, peduncle up to 13 cm tall in fruit. Fruit a capsule, up to 2.3 cm long, 0.9 cm wide, opening laterally by oblique slit for 3/4 of length. Seeds up to 20, smooth, shiny, brown, cylindrical, slightly curved, with elaiosome up to 1/3 of length, 5 mm long. 2n=12 (Sokolovskaya, 1966, as "Jeffersonia dubia"). (Table V).

Distribution: Bureya (very rare on eastern edge), Ussuri (mainly central and south). (Fig. 14). In deciduous and mixed forests, rarely in shrublands. Flowering April-May, fruiting July-August.

General distribution: Japanese-Chinese (China, North Korea). - Described from Khabarovsk: "On lower Amur: in coniferous forests near Paikhale, more towards forest edge, gregarious and frequent, May 29, 1853 (immature fruit); June 1, 1856 (immature fruit; V. Ditmar" (type - LE).

Note: The monotypic genus Jeffersonia Bart. is represented by J. diphylla Pers., distributed in eastern regions of North America (Atlantic states of USA). As shown by Hutchinson (1920), it differs in several significant characteristics, therefore there is no basis for uniting these genera.
