Japan Flora: Rhi­zomes densely tufted, the neck densely covered with dark brown comose fibrous remains of old leaf-sheaths; culms 30-50 cm. long, slightly scabrous above; leaf-blades 2-3 mm. wide, stiff; spikes 3-5, approximate except the lowest, the terminal staminate, narrowly linear, 4-10 cm. long, the lateral pistillate, cylindric or short-cylindric, 2-4 cm. long, erect, the bracts long-shcathing at base; staminate scales dark chestnut-brown, minutely ciliate; pistillate scales yellowish-golden, ovate, acute; perigynia longer than the scales, 4-6 mm. long, nearly eirct, oblong-fusiform, compressed-trigonous, membranous, stra­mineous, sparsely hairy, nerves slender, the beak acutely 2-toothed; stigmas 3. Apr.-May. Mountains.

Shikoku, Kyushu. Ryukyus and Formosa.
