Japan Flora: Rhizomes slightly woody, short creeping, much-branched, forming mats; culms 10-30 cm. long, slender, pilose-scabrous; leaves elongating after anthesis, pilose, the blades rather flat, 1.5-2.5 mm. wide, light to yellowish green, at first pilose-scabrous above, the basal sheaths partially dark reddish, prominently reticulate-fibrous, the ligules prolonged, pale, scarious, dorsally 2-lobed; spikes 2 or 3, contiguous, erect, the terminal staminate, narrowly lanceolate, 10-15 mm. long, usually reddish, the lateral pistillate, sessile, oblong, 5-10 mm. long, densely rather few-flowered, the lowest bract scalelike, clasping, short-setaceous at tip; pistillate scales ovate, abruptly short-cuspidate, dark castaneous, the margins broadly hyaline; perigynia longer than the scales, 4 mm. long, pilose, several-ribbed, with a thick stipe, abruptly short-beaked, with a dark purplish brown entire tip; stigmas 3. Apr.-June. Dry open woods.
