Korea Flora: Deciduous small tree or shrub. Branches thorny and hairy. Leaves alternate, trifoliate or with smooth margins, ovate. Trifoliate leaves have obtuse apex and cuneate base; leaves with smooth margins have acute apex and broadly cuneate base. Size 6-10cm × 3-6cm, upper surface with fine hairs, lower surface with woolly hairs. Petiole 15-25mm long, hairy. Flowers dioecious. Male inflorescence with many small flowers clustered in a round shape, yellow, about 1cm in diameter, with many short, soft hairs, 10-12mm long. Female inflorescence about 1.5mm in diameter, elliptical. Male flowers have 3-5 petals and 4 stamens; female flowers have 4 petals and a bifurcated style. Aggregate fruit round, 2-3cm in diameter, fleshy, red. Individual fruits (achenes) 5mm long, turning black when mature. The fleshy part is sweet and edible. Roots yellow.

Sporophyte chromosome number: 50.

Flowering May-June.

Fruiting Early September to early October.

Distribution: Central and southern China; from Hwanghaenamdo to Jeollanamdo and Jeju in Korea, mainly along the west and south coasts.
