Japan Flora: Tree with rather stout, coarsely pilose, gray-brown branches; leaves broadly ovate or ovate-orbicular, 10-22 cm. long, 6-18 cm. wide, abruptly caudate-acuminate, cordate at base, obtusely toothed, often 3-lobed, deep green, scabrous above, prominently short-pilose beneath especially on nerves, the petioles densely soft-puberulent, 3-5 cm. long; spikes short-cylindric, the pistillate 15-20 mm. long. Apr-May.
Honshu (Chugoku Distr.), Shikoku, Kyushu. Korea.
Korea Flora: Deciduous small tree. Winter buds and branchlets: Hairy, with soft hairs developing on branchlets. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate or almost circular-ovate, margin with small teeth, nearly obtuse, abruptly caudate-acuminate apex, subcordate base, often 3-lobed. Size 10-16(24)cm × (3)10-13(18)cm, upper surface with rough hairs, lower surface densely covered with short spreading hairs on veins. Petiole (2)3-4(9) cm long, with woolly hairs. Flowers: Female inflorescence short cylindrical, 15-20mm long, peduncle 5-10mm long. Style short and hairy. Fruit and seed: Fruit cluster 20-30 mm long, dark purple.
Sporophyte chromosome number: 28.

Distribution: Central China, southern Honshu to Kyushu in Japan; islands south of Hwanghae-do, Hwacheon in Gangwon-do, Jeollanamdo and Jeju in Korea.
