Japan Flora: Leaves elliptic, elliptic-ovate to lanceolate, 15-20 cm. long, 7.5-14 cm. wide, flat or undulate, acuminate to abruptly cuspidate, nar­rowly decurrent on the petiole or cordate to truncate, green, with 8-10 pairs of nerves; flowers dense, white, tardily ex­panding, about 4.5 cm. long, the bracts white, lanceolate, 15- 20 mm. long, the pedicels about 25 mm. long.  

Kyushu (Hyuga Prov.).

var. yakusimensis (Masam.) F. Maekawa. Leaves lanceolate, many-nerved; perianth softer and thinner than the typical form, with the upper portion campanulate-dilated; stamens exserted. Kyushu (Yakushima).
