Japan Flora: Large rank herb from stout rhizomes; leaves cordate, long-petioled, 15-22 cm. long, 10-17 cm. wide, green, ovate-orbicular, abruptly acute, with 8 or 9 pairs of nerves, smooth, glabrous, the margin slightly undulate; scapes 40-65 cm. long with 1-2(-4) scales; racemes elongate, the bracts 1(-2), 3-8 cm. long, narrowly ovate, or ovate-lanceolate, spreading, green; perianth infundibuliform, about 115 cm long; stamens as long as the perianth; capsules cylindric, 3- angled, pendulous, about 6.5 cm. long, 7-8 mm. wide; seeds winged on margin. Aug. Introduced from China, long cultivated in our gardens.

var. japonica Kikuchi & F. Maekawa. Leaves elongate, rather loose, the flowers narrower, usually sterile. China. Long cultivated in our gardens.
